The All Consuming Darkness That Swallows You Whole
When analyzing "Daughters of Darkness" the character, Rowan, uses dashes within her dialogue that shows she carefully chose words such as, “She’s— fine” (Smith 291). This is used when she is being asked about her aunt Opal, who is actually dead in the basement after being staked by an unknown vampire killer, she must try and convince Mary- Lynnette, so that she will not seem suspicious. Mary- Lynnette also uses dashes, “ Where— just where did she go” (Smith 291), that show how nervous she is because last night she saw Jade, Rowan, and Kestrel bury something in aunt Opal’s backyard and she believes it’s aunt Opal. The use of the dashes written by the author makes the story seem like a mystery case, trying to be solved by Mary- Lynnette who is very suspicious of aunt Opal’s nieces, so they claim to be. In order to keep aunt Opal’s untimely death a secret her nieces must choose their words carefully because while trying to discover what has happened to aunt Opal she may just discover what aunt Opal and her nieces really are, vampires.
